Every writer dreams of an ideal editor—the perfect sounding board who combines laserlike critical insight with the wise counsel of a literary mentor, balancing tough-love rigor with a sensitivity to his or her distinctive voice. The Full Monty gives you all that—and more. This is the sort of game-changing edit you’ll only get if you’re lucky enough to work with a world-class editor, as I did when I signed book deals with Grove Atlantic and Little, Brown. A one-on-one masterclass disguised as an exhaustive edit and analysis of your manuscript, The Full Monty is designed to produce conceptual breakthroughs that not only improve your work-in-progress profoundly but transform you as a writer.

My typical fee for The Full Monty, based on an average manuscript length of 250 pages, is $4,000, based on my hourly rate of $50. If your manuscript is longer than 250 pages or involves an especially complex subject, my fee may exceed that estimate. As always, I’ll contact you in advance to negotiate a higher fee if I believe I’ll need more than the usual length of time to read (for initial impressions), re-read (line-editing and commenting as I go), and critique your manuscript (in a lengthy memo synopsizing my editorial analysis).

The Full Monty includes:

  • A page-by-page analysis and line-edit of your manuscript, with meticulous edits, probing queries designed to challenge and inspire, constructive criticism, and detailed suggestions for solutions to problems raised by my analysis.
  • A five-10 page editorial memo, summarizing my analysis of your book and my insights into your strengths and weaknesses as a writer (and how best to make use of those insights, not only in your revisions but in years to come).
  • Open-ended discussions of your book and your goals as a writer before and after I conduct my editorial analysis of your manuscript. I’ll be happy to stay on the phone as long as you’d like to ensure your complete understanding of my critique and to address every question you have, touching not only on your work-in-progress but ranging widely across such subjects as creative satisfaction, commercial success, writing a book proposal, finding an agent, and securing a book deal. It should go without saying that I’m not going to be watching the clock during our conferences: such discussions are one of the most rewarding parts of the editing and coaching relationship, and I’m committed to fully supporting my clients, staying on the phone until every concern is addressed and every question answered.
